Americans have life expectancy, when adjusted for healthy years lived, of 69 years; a high figure, globally. Below average rates of infant mortality and undernourishment rank the United States 34th and 28th, respectively, on these variables. Government health expenditure per capita is the highest in the world; this high level of spending ensures a sufficient provision of hospital beds, an above average rate of immunisation for infectious diseases, and a very low incidence of tuberculosis. It also means that the entire American population has access to improved sanitation facilities, ranking the United States first for this variable. In 2009, almost 90%* of respondents were satisfied with the quality of water in their area. However, immunisation for measles falls below the global average at 93%, whilst deaths from respiratory diseases are above the global average. Public perceptions of health vary. Whilst 83%* of the population is content with their personal health in 2009, an above-average 38%* had felt worried or stressed on the previous day. Consequently, the United States falls below the global average with regard to the share of the population that feel well-rested, ranking the country 62nd on this variable. However, the fact that only 21%* reported debilitating health problems in 2009 indicates a more positive reality. Also, a high level of satisfaction with the beauty of the immediate environment places the United States 16th* on this variable.

Health outcomes in Sweden are very good with life expectancy, when adjusted for healthy years lived, placing the country in the top 10 of the Index. While levels of undernourishment are only slightly below the international average, Swedish infant mortality is the third lowest in the Index. The country has good health infrastructure, ranking 13th with respect to health expenditure and 42nd with regard to the availability of hospital beds. Preventative healthcare is also good. Sweden places 31st for rates of immunisation against measles and first for rates of immunisation against other infectious diseases. The entire population has access to adequate sanitation facilities, and 96%* of people are satisfied with the quality of water where they live. Sweden has the seventh lowest prevalence of tuberculosis, globally, although the rate of deaths from respiratory diseases is low, placing the country 52nd, globally. Swedish people express only moderate satisfaction with their personal health, placing the country 51st on this variable. The number of people who report a health problem interfering with their lifestyle is slightly above average, placing Sweden just 59th on this variable, while the proportion who feel well rested ranks only 88th globally. The proportion of people who had felt worried during most of the day before the 2008 survey was the second lowest of all countries. Furthermore, 93%* of people felt satisfied with the beauty of their physical surroundings, placing Sweden eighth on this variable.
